PhD in Medical Sociology

Requirements


1. Attainment of the Master's Degree in Sociology

2. 60 hours of substantive graduate level coursework including:

a) Medical Sociology Core (9 hours)

   (1) SOC 780 Medical Sociology

   (2) 2 of these 5 elective courses:

SOC 721 Social Psychology of Health and Illness, SOC 735 International Medical Sociology, SOC 781 Sociology of Health, SOC 787 Sociology of Mental Health, SOC 788 Social Medicine



Eyes

b) Theory Core (6 hours)

(1) SOC 707 Macro Sociological Theory and

(2) 1 of these

      SOC 720 Micro Sociological Theory

      SOC 722 Contemporary Sociological Theory

c) Statistics and Research Core (12 hours)

      SOC 701 Data Management

      SOC 703 Advanced Statistics

      SOC 705 Quantitative Methods

      SOC 711 Qualitative Methods

d) Sociology/Health Electives/Transfer Credits (30 hours-- at least 21hours in house, up to 9 hours outside the Department)

e) Proseminars (3 hours)

3) In addition to these curricular requirements the student must fulfill the following requirements:

     a) Journal Article. Submit at least one journal article from the thesis or dissertation for publication in a refereed journal. The student works closely with assigned mentors on this project. This article serves as the qualifying exam subject to approval by the student's doctoral advisory committee.

     b) Teaching. After receiving the Masters Degree students are required to teach at least one undergraduate course in the Department prior to graduation.

     c) Maintain a 3.3 GPA. Receipt of a grade of C or F in two or more courses will result in termination from the graduate program in Medical Sociology

     d) Successful Oral Defense of the Dissertation Proposal

     e) Admission to Candidacy for the Ph.D.

     f) Successful Completion of Oral Defense of the Dissertation

     g) Submission and Approval of the Completed Dissertation to Graduate School
