Professor Cockerham specializes in the study of cross national or international aspects of health, with broader interests in the general field of medical sociology and the sociology of mental illness. He has completed a study of health lifestyles in Russia and Eastern Europe and a theoretical model of health lifestyles. He is the President of the Research Committee on Health Sociology of the International Sociological Association (2006-2010) and a member of the editorial board of the American Sociological Review (2008-2011). Additionally, he is author of a widely-adopted textbook on medical sociology. His most recent book is Social Causes of Health and Disease (Polity, 2007).
