Dr. Clair joined UAB in 1989 after completing an N.I.A. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Health and Aging at the Andrus Gerontology Center, University of Southern California. Upon his arrival, he served as UAB's Director of Gerontology Education for eight years. As part of the General Internal Medicine faculty, he conducted doctor-patient communication research and taught residents as the Medical Interviewing Preceptor for the Primary Care Training Program in the School of Medicine for four years. Dr. Clair served as the as the Graduate Director for the Medical Sociology Doctoral Program from 2000 through 2006. He currently is in the third year of an ethnographic study of the street homeless. A planned book and film documentary, entitled American Refugees, should be complete during the Spring of 2008. Professor Clair is an elected UAB faculty senator and serves as a SBS consultant to the Institutional Review Board. In the Spring of 2008 he was awarded a Graduate School Dean's award for Excellence in Mentorship. His areas of specialization are social medicine, social psychology, ethnography, and death and dying. All of his current and planned teaching and research are focused on the application of sociology to everyday life.
