Curriculum Vita

I came to UAB after completing a Master's Degree at the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut. I am originally from Montgomery, AL where I attended Cloverdale Junior High and Jefferson Davis High schools. I am very glad to be back in Alabama. I currently live in Irondale, AL with my wife of ten years, Melinda, my two young children, Grace and Jillian, and four cats.

I teach classes on social problems, social psychology, political sociology, and advanced quantitative methods. I try hard to be available for my students as much as possible. I believe that they have interesting and important things to say -- I learn from them as much as they (hopefully) learn from me.

My work centers on four main areas of research: i) political sociology, especially the role of public opinion in policy formation, ii) economic sociology, especially the role of military spending in the American economic system, iii) group processes, especially the influence of social networks on aggression, popularity, and victimization among children and adolescents, and iv) medical sociology, especially the ways to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS.
