Helen Hughes Evans, M.D. Ph.D. joined the Administrative Staff of the School of Medicine in 2005 to serve as Associate Dean for Students. In this role Dr. Evans is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality, accessible and cost effective services required for student recruitment, admission, retention, evaluation, promotion, graduation and residency placement.
Evans received her undergraduate degree with honors in 1980 from Princeton University. She received her M.D. in 1990 and Ph.D. in the history of science from the Harvard University in 1995 and completed postdoctoral training at UAB. She also completed a research fellowship in social medicine and health policy at Harvard. She became a member of the faculty at UAB in 1989 as an Instructor of Medicine. In 1994 she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics with secondary appointments in the departments of History and Sociology.
Evans is active in several national societies such as the American Association for the History of Medicine, the History of Science Society, the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for the Social History of Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and the Association for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children.
She has received numerous teaching awards and serves as course director of History of Medicine in America, a required course for first year medical students, Images of Disease in Film, Fiction and History and The Doctor in Film, Fiction and History, scholars’ week courses for third and fourth year medical students. She is also the assistant clerkship director for third year medical students in pediatrics.
Her research interests center on the history of child sexual abuse, 19th and 20th century medicine, pediatrics and childhood. Interests also include the interaction between technology and medicine and medical ethics from a historical perspective
Dr. Evans is married to Eric Sorscher and has three children.
