Undergraduate Honors Program in Criminal Justice

PURPOSE
The Justice Sciences Honors Program encourages and prepares outstanding Justice Science students to pursue a career in the field of Criminology/Criminal Justice by providing an opportunity to conduct research. It promotes initiative, creativity, and independent thinking among academically talented students. Under faculty supervision, students will have the opportunity to participate in and complete a research project.

Justice

ELIGIBILITY
Students are admitted to the Honors Program based on an evaluation conducted by the Honors Program Coordinator and by a Committee of Justice Sciences faculty members. Students seeking admission to the Honors Program must:

+ Complete and submit an application for admission to the Honors Program Coordinator;

+ Schedule and complete an interview with the Honors Program Coordinator;

+ Complete all required Justice Sciences courses for the major (JS100, JS101, JS300, JS330, and JS410, as well as JS120 (or its equivalent));

+ Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and a GPA of 3.25 or higher in all Justice Sciences courses completed;

+ Be a second-semester junior (students are admitted to the Honors Program prior to August 1st of their senior year).

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
+ Completion of remaining elective courses for the criminal justice major;

+ Completion of JS481: Honors Seminar (Fall semester) and JS482 Honors Research (Spring semester);

+Completion of the Honors Research Project;

+ Honors Research Project colloquium presentation (Spring) or presentation at professional meetings (to be determined in consultation with faculty mentor and Honors Program Director)

BENEFITS
Participation in the Honors program provides opportunities for academically talented students to have unique access to faculty and to interact with other honors students in an environment that encourages creative and innovative thinking. Seminar participation and research experience will be useful for further work in the field of Criminology/Criminal Justice. Completion of the Honors program is an advantage when applying to graduate programs in the field. Finally, students who complete the program will graduate "With Honors in Justice Sciences."
