Brian Steele studies the intellectual, cultural, and political history of the Early American Republic, roughly 1776-1850.  His current research focuses on early American nationalism and conceptions of national identity, with a particular emphasis on the thought of Thomas Jefferson.  His article, "Thomas Jefferson's Gender Frontier," won the 2006 Frederick W. Connor Prize in the History of Ideas and is forthcoming in the Journal of American History.
