Pamela S. Murray, a historian of modern Latin America, and author of Dreams of Development: Colombia's National School of Mines and its Engineers, 1887-1970 (Tuscaloosa: The University of Alabama Press, 1997), has just completed the first, full-scale critical biography of Manuel Saenz, celebrated mistress, confidante, and supporter of South American revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar. Research for this project has taken her to archives and libraries in Bogota, Quito, and Lima and been funded by various grants from UAB as well as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. One of her first articles " 'Loca' or 'Libertadora': Manuela Saenz in the Eyes of History and Historians" recently was accepted for publication in the Journal of Latin American Studies (London).

For questions concerning her research, please contact Dr. Murray.
