Raymond A. Mohl is a historian of modern America, with a special interest in urban, ethnic, and social history. He was the founding editor of the Journal of Urban History in 1974 and continues to serve on the editorial board of that journal. He has written or edited a dozen books. They include Poverty in New York, 1783-1825 (Oxford University Press, 1971) and The New City: Urban America in the Industrial Age, 1860-1920 (Harlan Davidson, 1985). His most recent books are Urban Policy in Twentieth Century America (Rutgers University Press, 1993), The New African American Urban History (Sage Publications, 1996), and The Making of Urban America, 2nd ed. (Scholarly Resources, Inc., 1997). His collection of essays on modern Florida history, Sunshine State/Sunbelt City to be published by the University Press of Florida. His scholarly articles have appeared in such journals as Journal of American History, Journal of American Ethnic History, Labor History, Reviews in American History, International Migration Review, American Studies and many other publications. In the past few years, three of his articles (in the Journal of Urban History and the Florida Historical Quarterly) have won writing prizes. His research has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Poverty and Race Research Action Council. He has served as a Fulbright lecturer at Tel Aviv University and the University of Western Australia, and he has also held the prestigious George Bancroft Fulbright chair in American History at the University of Gottingen in Germany. His research on the history of race relations in Miami has led to service as an expert witness in important elections and housing cases in Dade County, Florida, and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights sought his testimony on the state of race relations in Miami when it held hearings in the city in 1995. Dr. Mohl is past president of the Urban History Association, an international organization of over 500 scholars interested in the history of cities and urbanization. He is currently working on two new books: one on the history of race relations in the Miami metropolitan area, and another on the interstate highway system and urban America.
