Margaret E. Armbrester, an American and Alabama historian, is the author of several books on Alabama themes and people. The University of Alabama Press will publish her co-edited work (with colleague, Samuel Webb) entitled Alabama's Governors: Essays in Political History, 1798-2001 in spring 2001. This book includes essays written by the most foremost historians and political scientists of the southern political scene. Samuel Ullman and "Youth": The Life, The Legacy (The University of Alabama Press, 1993) is a biography of the late nineteenth-century Birmingham civic leader and poet whose essay, "Youth," helped to inspire a Japanese population to economic and spiritual recovery after World War II. Her other works include The Civitan Story: 1917-1992 (Civitan International, 1992), The Alabama History and Heritage Festival: A Case Study (Committee for the Humanities in Alabama, 1984), John C. Persons: Citizen-Soldier (Oxmoor Press, 1974), as well as numerous articles and book reviews on southern historical themes. Armbrester received the Presidential Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences for 1992. In addition to her duties within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Armbrester is Curator of the Samuel Ullman Museum and Director of the Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education (BACHE). She is currently acting as co-editor of a book on Alabama's Governors.
